Volume 6, Issue 1
From the Desk of Brian Traquair
Welcome to our re-launched eNews for Securities Finance! We’re always looking for ways to improve the way we communicate with you so we can keep you up to date on our latest developments. You might notice some aesthetic changes, as well as more focused content to help you navigate easily to the news that interests you most.
One of the new additions to our newsletter is the introduction of our thought leadership column. This month features Craig Costigan in “Electronic Marketplace for Securities Finance,” in which he explores electronic services for general collateral and describes how LCOR can help augment the process by automating the entire process—not just parts of it—in real-time. Today, more than 100 companies use LCOR, and this year we expect to surpass last year’s volumes.
This type of growth is indicative of the securities finance industry as a whole as it experiences one milestone after another. As such, we see the interplay of internal and external trading technologies and networks growing in importance. Volumes, values and complexity continue to grow, while industry participants look to manage risk and make the most effective use of capital. Global equity finance and repo trading and operations platforms are increasingly important in helping organizations compete in a one-world-book environment, where an end-to-end solution is imperative.
Such themes resounded at the ISLA/RMA Conference in Monte Carlo this month, which attracted hundreds of organizations from around the world to discuss best market practices and global standards in the international securities lending arena. There is clearly growing interest in order networks and electronic markets for securities finance, greater transparency and new methods for price discovery. This trend is balanced with the practical reality of mixed trading books of general collateral and specials, credit risk controls and management of exclusives. In the U.S. and Europe, firms are also looking for turnkey compliance solutions that enable them to focus on doing business.
Aligned with the changing industry landscape, we continue to invest heavily in our securities finance solutions. With Martini version 5.5 now in beta testing, we’re preparing for the successful roll-out to customers in June. We also have a new release of Global One, v6.6.2 which includes important enhancements for brokers and lenders, improved repo and dividend processing, and more. We’ve also increased the number and breadth of Global One focus groups and seminars to help you get the best value from your systems in both the short- and long-term.
With SunGard Europa 2007 in Lago di Como, Italy less than 2 weeks away, we’re gearing up for our comprehensive securities finance program. Our Martini track will focus on how organizations can optimize returns and minimize risk through consolidation as volumes in the securities finance industry continue to grow. Our Global One sessions will involve our continued expansion of functionality to meet the specific requirements of new markets, while continuing to improve the efficiency of processing in established markets. We hope you plan to join us for another successful event this year.
